The AI citation gap: what it is and how to find yours
AI answers cite sources. A citation gap is when those sources name a competitor but not you: what it is, why analytics miss it, how to find yours.
AI assistants no longer just answer — they answer with sources. If those sources never include you, you are invisible at the exact moment a buyer makes up their mind. We call that distance the citation gap. This guide explains what it is, why your analytics will not show it, and how to find yours.
AI answers come with sources
OpenAI's documentation for its web search tool says it lets models answer from the live web "with sourced citations", and that inline citations show only the most relevant references, while a separate list holds every page the model consulted1. On Google's side, the documentation notes that "AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary"2. In both cases the pattern is the same: the assistant composes an answer and points at a handful of pages it leaned on.
Those few cited pages carry the weight of the whole answer. If a buyer asks an assistant to compare options and your brand is not in the answer, you are not on the list that buyer reads.
What a citation gap is
A citation gap is our name for a specific, checkable situation: an AI answer to a question your customers ask cites source pages — and those pages mention a competitor, but not you. The answer's author is the assistant, but the raw material came from pages you could have been on: comparison posts, directories, documentation, reviews.
That makes the gap actionable. You do not have to guess why an assistant prefers a competitor; you can read the exact pages it cited and see who is named on them.
Why your analytics will not show it
The gap is invisible in traffic reports because AI systems read far more than they send back. Cloudflare tracks this with a crawl-to-refer ratio: the pages a platform crawls, set against how often it sends users to the site3. Cloudflare's data puts the split plainly: "Over the past 12 months, 80% of AI crawling was for training, compared with 18% for search and just 2% for user actions"3. Most of what AI does with your site never shows up as a visit — so the place you lose buyers is inside the answers, not in your referral numbers.
How to find your gap
You can do a first pass by hand:
- Write down the questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours — without using your brand name.
- Ask them in the assistants your market uses, and open the cited sources on each answer.
- For each source page, note who is mentioned: you, a competitor, neither.
Google's position is that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Search2. So the fixes are familiar work: the hard part is seeing which pages to fix. OLAB Assist automates the loop: it records the AI answers to your questions, reads the pages those answers cite, and flags the ones that mention a competitor but not you — each flag with the evidence attached.
