GEO vs SEO: what actually changes, and what doesn't

GEO and SEO share a foundation, but success, competition and measurement work differently in AI answers. What changes, what doesn't, and where to focus.

Generative engine optimization — GEO — is the work of being present in AI-generated answers: when an assistant answers a buyer's question, your brand is named, your pages are cited, your facts are the ones repeated. SEO is the work of being found in search results. The two overlap more than the acronyms suggest, but the differences are real, and they change where your effort goes.

What stays the same

The platforms are clear that AI visibility is not a separate technical discipline. Google documents that ordinary SEO best practices still apply to its AI features, and that appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode has no extra requirements1. Crawlable pages, readable HTML, content that answers real questions — the foundation is shared. If your SEO fundamentals are broken, GEO is broken too.

Difference 1: the unit of success

SEO success is a ranking and a click. GEO success is a mention inside an answer — and the click may never come. Cloudflare tracks this with a crawl-to-refer ratio, the pages a platform crawls set against how often it sends users to the site2. Its data puts the split plainly: "Over the past 12 months, 80% of AI crawling was for training, compared with 18% for search and just 2% for user actions"2. A brand can be winning inside answers while its referral traffic barely moves — which means traffic reports alone cannot tell you whether GEO is working.

Difference 2: the competition is a shortlist

A results page has room for everyone to rank somewhere. An answer does not. OpenAI's web search documentation says answers come "with sourced citations", and adds that "the number of sources is often greater than the number of citations"3. The system reads many pages and names a few: either your brand and your pages make that shortlist, or for that buyer you do not exist.

Difference 3: answers vary, so measurement must repeat

Rankings move slowly enough to check weekly. Answers do not even promise consistency between two runs: Google notes that its AI Mode and AI Overviews can run on different models and techniques, so their answers and links will differ1. Measuring GEO therefore looks less like a rank tracker and more like a daily log: the same questions, asked on a schedule, with the answers and citations recorded so a trend is visible.

Difference 4: much of the work happens on pages you don't own

Classic SEO concentrates effort on your own site. In GEO, part of the battlefield is the set of pages answers cite — comparisons, directories, documentation, community threads. If those pages name a competitor and not you, the answers follow them. The work is to find those exact pages and earn a mention, which is a different muscle from publishing one more blog post.

Where OLAB Assist fits

OLAB Assist is built for the GEO half of this split: it records the AI answers to your questions daily, reads the pages those answers cite, flags the ones that mention a competitor but not you, and turns each finding into a task — context, evidence, steps and code — that you or your AI agent can run. Your SEO stack keeps doing its job; this is the layer it cannot see.
