Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand? Five causes to check

Your site ranks, but ChatGPT never names your brand? Five checkable causes, from crawler access to the pages AI cites, and what to fix first.

Your product is good, your site ranks, and yet when a buyer asks ChatGPT for options in your category, your name never comes up. Before you change anything else, work through five checkable causes — most of them technical, all of them fixable. Here they are, in the order we would check them.

1. Its search crawler cannot reach your site

ChatGPT's search features use a dedicated crawler, and OpenAI is direct about it: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links"2. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file to help ensure your site appears in search results2. Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall rules: a blanket "block all bots" rule often catches OAI-SearchBot too. After you fix it, OpenAI notes it can take roughly 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust2.

2. Your content answers your questions, not the buyer's

OpenAI's developer documentation shows how this works in its web search tool: the model runs searches of its own, and the response usually lists the queries it searched1. The buyer asks "best option for a small team" — the system searches for something like that, not for your brand name. If every page on your site is organized around your own product vocabulary, you can be invisible for the questions that actually get asked. Write pages that answer the buyer's question in the buyer's words.

3. Nothing on the open web vouches for you

An answer draws on more pages than it shows: OpenAI's documentation notes that inline citations cover only the most relevant references, and that "the number of sources is often greater than the number of citations"1. In practice, answers lean on source pages: comparisons, directories, documentation, reviews. If the pages an assistant cites for your category mention competitors but not you, the answer will too. This is the citation gap — we cover it in detail in a separate guide.

4. Your content is invisible to the crawler

Independent crawler research by Vercel found that none of the major AI crawlers in its tests rendered JavaScript, so they can't read client-side rendered content3. If your key pages are a client-rendered app, the crawler may fetch them and see nearly nothing. Server-render the pages that carry your positioning and your product facts.

5. You are measuring too rarely to notice patterns

AI answers vary between runs and change as the underlying sources change. A one-off spot check is a single snapshot; a daily record shows whether you are trending in or out of the answers. OLAB Assist records the AI answers to your questions every day, reads the pages those answers cite, and turns each finding into a task you can hand to your AI agent — so the five causes above stop being a quarterly fire drill and become a list you work through.
